Two lab-grown diamonds can have the same carat weight, colour and clarity grades yet come from different production methods. For buyers researching lab grown diamonds HPHT, understanding that distinction is useful, but it should not overshadow the qualities that have the greatest effect on how the finished diamond actually looks.

HPHT stands for High Pressure High Temperature. It describes one of the main methods used to grow diamonds in a controlled environment. The other widely used method is Chemical Vapour Deposition, or CVD.

The growth method can tell you something about how a diamond formed. It does not, by itself, tell you whether one polished stone will be more attractive than another.

What happens during HPHT diamond growth?

HPHT production uses a small diamond seed, a carbon source and specialised equipment capable of producing intense heat and pressure. Under these conditions, carbon dissolves and crystallises onto the seed, allowing a diamond crystal to grow.

The process was developed to reproduce some of the physical conditions associated with natural diamond formation, although it takes place in engineered equipment rather than deep underground. IGI describes HPHT systems as using heat, pressure, a seed crystal, carbon and a catalyst to produce diamond growth.

Once the rough crystal has formed, it still needs to be planned, cut and polished. That distinction matters. Growth technology produces the rough diamond; skilled cutting determines much of the appearance of the finished stone.

A poorly proportioned HPHT diamond can look less lively than a well-cut alternative. Buyers should therefore avoid treating the letters “HPHT” as a quality grade.

HPHT and CVD are origins, not beauty scores

CVD takes a different approach. A diamond seed is placed inside a chamber containing carbon-bearing gases, and carbon is deposited onto the seed as the crystal develops.

Both methods can produce laboratory-grown diamond material with essentially the same chemical and optical properties associated with diamond. Professional testing is used to distinguish laboratory-grown diamonds from natural diamonds because ordinary visual inspection is not considered a reliable identification method.

Do not confuse HPHT growth with HPHT treatment

This distinction is easy to miss.

An HPHT-grown diamond is a diamond whose crystal was created using the High Pressure High Temperature process.

HPHT treatment, however, refers to the use of high pressure and temperature after growth or formation to alter certain characteristics, often involving colour. The terms describe different stages and should not be treated as interchangeable.

This becomes particularly relevant when reading a grading report. Depending on the laboratory and type of report, information about laboratory-grown origin, growth process and detected post-growth treatment may be disclosed. IGI, for example, states that growth process and treatments can be noted in report comments in applicable cases.

Ask a jeweller two separate questions if the documentation is unclear:

  • Was the diamond grown using HPHT or CVD?
  • Was any post-growth treatment detected or disclosed?

Those questions provide more useful information than simply asking whether a stone is “HPHT.”

Cut still deserves more attention than the growth label

Suppose two round lab-grown diamonds are both one carat and have similar colour and clarity grades. One is HPHT-grown and the other CVD-grown.

Their visual performance can still differ because of table size, depth, crown and pavilion relationships, symmetry, polish and overall cutting precision.

For fancy shapes such as oval, pear, radiant or emerald cuts, the outline and proportions become even more personal. An oval with an unsuitable length-to-width ratio may look too narrow or too broad for the intended ring. A poorly selected emerald cut can expose inclusions more easily because its large step facets create a different viewing pattern from a brilliant cut.

This is where a specification sheet becomes more useful than a growth-method label. Compare measurements, cut information where applicable, clarity characteristics and how the diamond appears in clear video or magnified imagery.

Grading documentation should match the diamond

A grading document provides an independent reference for characteristics such as identity and quality. IGI assesses laboratory-grown diamonds using the familiar 4Cs framework, while laboratories may offer different report formats and services.

Before ordering, check that the report number corresponds with the diamond being offered. Where a girdle inscription is provided, it offers another identification point that can be compared with the documentation.

For Singapore buyers researching lab diamonds, reviewing the grading report alongside the actual stone specifications can be more useful than choosing by carat weight alone.

A slightly smaller diamond with stronger cut proportions may be a better jewellery decision than a larger stone selected mainly to reach a particular carat figure.

The setting can change which specifications matter most

Diamond selection should also account for the jewellery design.

A solitaire exposes much of the centre stone, so outline, symmetry and visible inclusions can attract greater attention. A halo can increase the apparent spread of the overall design, which may reduce the need to push the centre diamond to a larger carat weight.

Bezel settings surround more of the diamond’s edge with metal and can suit buyers who value additional protection around the stone. Prong settings expose more of the diamond but require sensible maintenance because prongs can wear or move over time.

Growth method does not solve any of these design questions. Ring architecture still matters.

An HPHT-grown diamond can be assessed using much the same practical buying discipline applied to any serious diamond purchase. Start with documentation, then move to the characteristics that affect appearance and wear.

Check the diamond’s exact measurements rather than relying solely on carat weight. Review cut proportions and videos where available. Confirm the grading document and any disclosed growth or post-growth treatment information. Consider whether the clarity grade makes sense for the diamond shape rather than paying automatically for a grade that produces little visible difference.

For a ring, confirm finger sizing, metal choice, setting height, wedding-band compatibility and the process for future resizing or maintenance. Online buyers should also understand delivery arrangements, return terms and what happens if the ring size needs adjustment after arrival.

The most useful way to interpret HPHT is therefore as information about how the diamond was grown, not a shortcut for judging how beautiful the finished jewellery will be. A strong purchase decision comes from reading the report carefully, comparing the polished diamond itself and choosing specifications that make sense for the setting and the person who will wear it.
